Logel, Peter C.
Chili: Monday, June 17, 2019, at age 78. Predeceased by his parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Tracy (Hargrave) Logel; daughters, Sheila (James) Popowych, Shelley (Keith) Schlosser, Sandra Fink of FL; 6 grandchildren; brother, William (Paula) Logel; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Mr. Logel was a retired chemist from both Eastman Kodak Co. and Monroe County, and served on the Gates-Chili School Board for 17 years.
Recently a family friend remarked that "Peter's life was truly a profile in courage". It really was. Peter never complained about his handicap and its advancing progress over the years. Instead, he kept going. He commented once to a reporter that "yes" he could curl up in a ball, but instead he preferred to enjoy what he had. Ever so often we would hear him tell someone who asked how he was doing "you get used to hanging if you hang long enough". Then he'd laugh. He just accepted the declining phases and moved on.
Peter was a graduate of Alfred State College and RIT. He worked at Eastman Kodak as a chemist for 27 years, retiring in 1991. When a job opportunity opened in the Monroe County Environmental Health Lab, he applied and worked there another 20 years, retiring in 2013. Peter was an active member of Toastmasters International and he thoroughly enjoyed giving humorous speeches. He was elected to the Gates-Chili School Board and served for 17 years. He was President for 6 of those years. While serving, he was able to present high school diplomas to his daughters at graduation. He volunteered with a reading program teaching people privately, and he opened his home to hosting over 30 high school exchange students from various countries over many years.
Peter raised three daughters with love and encouragement. He attended all of their events, whether sports or dance recitals. He loved sports and enjoyed taking the foreign exchange students to various sporting events. Most of all he enjoyed teaching them about baseball and took them to many Red Wing games where he was a season ticket holder.
Peter always had a goal to achieve and as he passed each stage of his illness, he'd set another one. His first was to walk all 3 daughters down the aisle, and his last was to work at least 20 more years. He accomplished both. Peter's life was truly courageous and a lesson to all those who knew him.
Friends may call THURSDAY, June 27, from 4-8PM at the DiPonzio Funeral Home, Inc., 219 Spencerport Road, Gates. On Friday, June 28, all are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at 12:30PM at St. Pius X Church, 3000 Chili Avenue. Private interment at Woodhull Cemetery in Woodhull, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1000 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14620 or to Monroe Community Hospital Foundation, 435 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, NY 14620 in his memory.
