Obituary for Raymond E. Howe

Raymond Howe, 81, of Rochester, NY passed away peacefully on May 2, 2023. He is predeceased by his father, Robert K. Howe; mother, Ella Tucker Howe; daughter, Kerry Lynn Howe; sister, Joanne Howe; grandson, Callan. He is survived by his partner, Mary Sterling; sons, Todd (Beverly) and Ryan (Dawn); grandchildren Madeline, Andrew, Avery and London; former wife and mother of his children, Volena; twin brother, Bob; sister, Nancy Bravi; and many nieces, nephews, friends.

Ray was born in Panama, NY and graduated from Panama High School. He attended SUNY Brockport, where he met Volena, and received his BS in Education. After teaching and coaching in Fairport schools for several years, he decided to try his hand at property investments, restoration and development.

About that same time, Ray bought his first sailboat. These two passions, property management and sailing, are what defined Ray for the rest of his life and, with the help and support of Volena, were the legacies that he passed down to his sons, Todd and Ryan, and what many people knew and respected him for. Ray was a pioneer in the Multi-hull sailboat racing community and an early developer of the Rochester Park Avenue neighborhood. He was a visionary, dreamer and a doer.

Ray and Mary were together since 1990 and spent time at their waterfront property in Chaumont, NY as well as the home they built in Whitesville, NY in the Southern Tier. They moved back to Rochester in 2021 to be closer to family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
