Obituary for Salvatrice "Silvia" Centanni (DiBetta)

Centanni, Salvatrice "Silvia"
Of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 25 at age 95. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Rosario Centanni, who died in 2014. She is survived by her daughters, Filippa (Scott) Sulli, Rosanna Centanni, and Julia (Dan) Graf; her grandchildren Vanessa (Ryan) Johnson, Matthew Dodson, Adam Sulli (Brittany Higdon), Rachel Graf, and Daniel Graf: great-grandchildren, Giovanni Sulli and Giuliana and Damian Johnson; brother, Vincenzo (Maria) DiBetta; brother-in-law Sam Centanni; sisters-in-law Rose Centanni and Maria Di Gioia DiBetta, and several nieces and nephews. Salvatrice devoted her entire life to caring for others: first, her six siblings in her hometown of Alia, Sicily, where she was born on January 23, 1927; later, her own devoted husband and much-loved children in Rochester. Salvatrice and Rosario were wonderful parents who provided ample love and caring to their three children. They also helped raise their grandchildren, providing love and support—along with Salvatrice’s excellent home cooking, with ingredients from Rosario’s beloved garden and using recipes that had been handed down in her family for generations. Salvatrice loved nothing more than to bring her family together for family meals, especially at the holidays, where she was an exemplary host who reveled in the warm embrace of her family. She was also a caring neighbor and generous friend, offering support and friendship to all those in need—usually along with a tasty home-baked goodie. Although she left Sicily in mid-life to settle in Rochester, she never forgot her roots, and traveled with her husband and children back to Italy where beloved family members and friends warmly welcomed her. Salvatrice had a deep and abiding faith in God, and she and Rosario attended Mass regularly at their home parish, St. Theodore’s Catholic Church in Rochester. Salvatrice’s family wish to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Highland Hospital and University of Rochester Medical Center, who made her last days comfortable and provided care to her over the years. Donations may be directed to Highland Hospital Foundation and St. Theodore’s Church in her memory.
No prior calling. A funeral Mass will be held to celebrate the life of Salvatrice Centanni at St. Theodore’s Church, 168 Spencerport Road, Rochester, NY, on Friday, April 29 at 11:15 a.m. Burial will be held at White Haven Memorial Park, Pittsford, New York.
