East Rochester: passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at age 94. Predeceased by his son, Sam Poletta; daughter-in-law, Shirley Porter. His legacy will live on by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy (DiPerno) Poletta; children, Vicky (Joe) Lima, Tom Poletta, MaryBeth (Steve) Barber, Frank (Beverly) Poletta; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; special nephews, Raymond Tramonto, Jim Schiano, Les Abbamonte, Paul Tramonto, Jim Hearn and Tony Tramonto; many other loving nieces and nephews.
Sam lived a full life in his 94 years. He retired from RG&E after 42 years starting as a draftsman and retiring as the Recreation Director. He touched so many lives with his love of sports. In 2007 he was inducted into the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame. He enjoyed refereeing College Basketball and Section V basketball for many years. Sam competed at an elite level in a multitude of sports including basketball, handball, racquetball and golf. He began playing golf at Durand Eastman and continued to play 3 days a week with his buddies at Victor Hills Golf Club.
Friends may call FRIDAY, January 5, from 4-7PM at the DiPonzio Funeral Home, Inc., 219 Spencerport Road, Gates. On Saturday, January 6, all are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at 10:00AM at St. Jerome’s Church. Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in his memory.
